For those who just moved to Japan, you might be looking to sign up for a Netflix plan here. So, how much is Netflix in Japan and which plan should you get?
Without beating around the bush, here are the current prices for Netflix in Japan.
Basic | Standard | Premium | |
Monthly price (tax incl.) | ¥990 | ¥1,490 | ¥1,960 |
Resolution | SD (max 480p) | HD (max 1080p) | Ultra HD (max 2160p) |
Screens you can watch on at the same time | 1 | 2 | 4 |
On any of the plans, you can watch on any device unlimited movies and TV shows and cancel at anytime.
How many profiles can you have on Netflix?
You can have up to five profiles on Netflix. However, this does not mean that five people can watch at one time.
How many people can stream at one time?
How many people can stream at a time depends on the plan you subscribe to.
- The Basic plan lets you stream to one device at a time.
- The Standard plan lets you stream to two devices at a time.
- The Premium plan lets you stream to four devices at a time.
Which Netflix account should I get?
Choosing a plan ultimately comes down to two factors;
- What resolution does your television support
- How many people are going to be streaming at the same time
Assuming that you will not buy a new TV to watch Netflix, I recommend that you choose the plan that your TV supports.
My television is an old 32-inch Sony Bravia and only supported up to 1080p. In this case, getting the Premium plan would be a waste of ¥640 a month.
Even if your TV supports 4K (Ultra HD) content, the HDMI port on your TV/receiver must be HDCP 2.2 and above to stream it.
While it ultimately comes down to personal preference, most would probably choose the Standard plan.

Can you cancel Netflix at any time?
The answer is yes. You can cancel Netflix relatively easily from the account page. However, you cannot cancel in the middle of the month and expect the remainder of the month to be refunded.
Once you cancel, you will still have access to your plan until the month ends.
Bonus: How to watch Netflix from other regions?
When you've signed up for an account, you'll find that some titles you want to watch aren't available on local Netflix.
Or, some titles might release later. For example, the popular Korean drama Itaewon School and Vagabond was released in Japan a few weeks later than in other regions.
To gain access to all the titles Netflix is offering, you have to use a VPN. Check out my guide on which is the best VPN for Netflix.
If you don't want to read that, the short version is that you should download ExpressVPN. It's not free, but ExpressVPN has given me the most consistent and reliable results after trying many VPNs when it comes to Netflix.
